The islands have a complicated history with control passing from Spain, to France, to Great Britain during the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Finally the islands became a British territory, which makes Queen Elizabeth II state's chief. The Turks and Caicos became a British overseas territory in 1973.
The seas surrounding Caicos Turks & maintain the record for the earliest excavated shipwreck. Archaeologists believe in 1513, the Pinta from Christopher Columbus visited the island. Artifacts in the boat can be seen in the National Museum. Turks & Caicos has a history of piracy. The famous pirate known as Calico Jack Rackham used the area to the hideout. His pirate lady, Anne Bonny, was also known to live on Pirate Cay Island.

Hidden behind a charming of red-tiled roofs and whitewashed terraces, the Turks & Caicos National Museum is one of the heritage draws of this archipelago's capital, Cockburn Town.
The building itself is known as Guinep House. (It is named after the big tropical fruit tree that stands outside front and is deemed to have nearly 200 years of history.) Inside and also the collections begin in earnest, with the rebuilt remains of the Molasses Reef Wreck that is iconic — the oldest shipwreck in the Americas.
You can take a trip back in time by visiting the sunk Spanish caravel from around 1500, that provides a glimpse at the powers which passed this way. Pay a visit to the displays look at the Lucayan individuals who resided here before the arrival of the Europeans and islander culture.
Explore the Conch Bar Caves from the very heart of Middle Caicos island, cutting deep into karst hills and the stone beds there to form a labyrinth of tunnels and chambers. The remains of ancient tribespeople were found but history fans need to opt instead to visit the Indian Caves, where there are oodles more artifacts and relics to visit.
Facts: The Turks and Caicos Islands (also Called TCI) are just two types of tropical islands in the Atlantic Ocean situated northeast of the Bahamas, north of Haiti and east of Cuba roughly 600 kilometers from Miami.
The Taino Indians came from other Caribbean islands between 500 to 800 AD — were inhabitants of Turks and Caicos.
Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León has been the first European reported to sight the islands in 1512.
