Phuket Island was on one of the main trading routes between India and China and has been frequently mentioned in foreign trader’s ship logs. Recently, however, Phuket’s top industry has been tourism, which has transformed the island into Thailand’s wealthiest province. Expect prices to be a little higher than on the mainland. The west coast of Phuket was hit badly by the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004, but almost no signs of the damage now stays. Most beaches are on the west coast, with Phuket Town to the southeast and the airport in the northwest. Western Phuket is exactly what Phuket is famous for. There’s a huge array of beaches, some calm, some totally ruined by countless visitors annually. Southeastern Phuket (Chalong Bay, Cape Panwa, Nai Han, Rawai, Ya Nui) has slightly off-beat beaches which are worth the trip. Chalong Bay is the biggest town that serves as a harbour for incoming ships to Phi Phi island and many other south islands. Besides Phuket Town, the interior of Phuket is pretty much unvisited by overseas visitors. This fertile hilly expanse contains mangrove forests, fishing villages, rubber and pineapple plantations, small Muslim communities and shrimp farms. The Phra Taew National Park is a wonderful escape from the tourist crowds, as is the Gibbon Project. ●▬▬▬▬▬ WATCH TODAY ▬▬▬▬▬● https://youtu.be/kf0B_p75rTQ PLACES TO VISIT • Chalong Bay — home to Phuket’s most popular yacht anchorage and the primary gateway to the islands off Phuket • Kamala — a quieter beach to the north of Patong • Karon — the 2nd most-developed shore after Patong • Kata — occupied, clean tourist beaches with great surf, divide into Kata Yai and Kata Noi Beaches • Nai Thon and Nai Yang — two silent beaches in Sirinat National Park • Patong — the biggest beach resort famous for its night life • Phuket Town — the administrative centre of the province along with the island’s main population center • Rawai — set off point for lots of local islands, popular with locals for eating on the front • Surin — an up-and-coming up-market destination

From Phuket to other top destinations:

• Ao Nang — 3 hours by ferry, departure Ko Phi Phi. A tourist hub for neighboring islands, e.g., Ko Hong, Ko Poda and Rai Leh • Khao Lak — family-oriented hotel region that has made an impressive comeback following the tsunami • Khao Sok National Park — one of the most beautiful wildlife reserves in Thailand • Ko Lanta — 3.5 hours by ferry, another island destination, gaining more fame • Ko Phayam — arguably Thailand’s most beautiful small island, 20 minutes by boat from Ranong airport • Ko Phi Phi — 1.5 hours by ferry, parts of The Beach were filmed at this stunningly beautiful place • Krabi — provincial capital of Krabi Province that functions as a transportation hub to a lot of beaches • Rai Leh — 2.5 hours by ferry, passing Ko Phi Phi, renowned for its rock climbing • Similan Islands — national park comprising nine little paradise islands. Hugely popular among divers as a result of unbelievable underwater scenery.
