The capital of Portugal, Lisbon (Portuguese: Lisboa) has undergone a renaissance in recent years, with a modern culture that's alive and flourishing and making its mark in today's Europe. Perched on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon is one of those rare Western European cities which faces the sea and uses water as a component that defines the town. WHAT TO DO >> Fado In Chiado - Daily series (except on Sundays) with a length of 40 minutes - An opportunity to become familiar with Fado, a broadly popular traditional Portuguese music genre that's been declared World Heritage by UNESCO. Have a walk in the lush gardens of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation among Europe's most prestigious cultural associations. Have a look at the Gulbenkian Museum (which is also an architectural landmark in itself) and its classical art collection; the newer Gulbenkian Modern Art Museum and the concert hall with a continuously ongoing programe of jazz, classical and world music. Throughout the summer, concerts are held at the Gulbenkian gardens' open-air theater. Have lunch or dinner in LX Factory. Love a jazz concert and beverages at the Hot Clube de Portugal (phone: +351 21 3619740) - Portugal has a thriving jazz scene, the middle of which is the Hot Clube de Portugal - one of the oldest jazz clubs in the world, situated in Praça da Alegria, near Avenida da Liberdade. Different hiking paths around Sintra Cascais Natural Park: Spend 1 day around nature, hiking in the UNESCO World Heritage Site -- Sintra! You'll walk through the luxuriant woods achieving panoramic views of the shore, Lisbon, and all of the Sintra Mountains as well as the palace. The Mãe d'Água (Mother of the Water) reservoir of the Amoreiras, the biggest of the water reservoirs, was completed in 1834.

Belem neighbourhood:

Belem Tower (Torre de Belém). Open 10AM-5:30PM in winter, 10AM-6:30PM in summer (with the previous entry allowed 30 minutes before closing ). A ticket package for the Belem Tower and Jeronimos Monastery is offered for $12. Bear in mind that access to the peak of the tower, and intermediate floors, is through a very narrow, steep spiral stairs. Entry fee for the tower just is $5.

Jeronimos Monastery

Jerónimos Monastery, Praça perform Império, 1400-206 Lisboa, ☎ 21 362 00 34, Open 10AM-5:30PM in winter, 10AM-6PM in summertime. Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos). There's a well-concealed pedestrian subway based on the Monastery and the Monument. Entry fees $4.

CCB (Belém Cultural Center),

Open Tu-Su. The contemporary CCB retains a permanent contemporary art exhibition, from the Berardo Collection - it features works from Picasso, Dalí, Duchamp, Magritte, Andy Warhol.

Coach Museum (Museu dos Coches),

Housed in the former riding school of the palace, do not miss the world's largest collection of trainers and imperial vehicles/ Statue into Afonso de Albuquerque. In front of the former Royal Palace of Belém, now the Presidential Palace, there's an enormous statue looking out to sea, representing Afonso de Albuquerque, next ruler of Portuguese India from the early 16th century.
